UK 'needs more buy-to-let properties'

There needs to be a rise in the availability of buy-to-let
properties in the UK, it has been suggested.
According to the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), 58 per cent of people polled
during a conference for the lettings industry said a shortage in
the supply of such homes is the biggest challenge facing the
sector.
The government should step in to help raise the number of houses
and flats to rent, it claimed.
Among the measures put forward by the organisation was assistance
for landlords to help them get mortgages.
Also, incentives for improvements to older buildings should be
considered, it posited.
Ian Potter, operations manager at ALRA - which was formed in 1981
and is a professional and regulatory body for letting agents - said: "Significant policy decisions
will be set out in the coming months of the election and it is
imperative that all the parties factor the private rented sector
into their strategies on the national housing supply."
